Some titles don’t need inventing — they’re already perfect. “Maharaja, Tomare Selam” is the refrain of the song Satyajit Ray wrote, composed, and set to film himself in Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969) — the moment his two bumbling heroes win over a hostile king using nothing but music, singing “Your Majesty, we salute you” in a language that needs no translation. It’s one of the most beloved musical sequences in Bengali cinema, and the phrase has outlived the film itself — it’s lent its name to a posthumous collection of Ray’s own writing, and to tributes written about him ever since. Using his own words to salute the man himself felt like the only honest way to do this tee.
It’s also, right now, a phrase back in the headlines: Srijit Mukherji is currently in pre-production on a biographical drama titled Maharaja, Tomare Selam, tracing how Ray brought Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne to life — produced in partnership with Piyali Films, the house that made the original, alongside a Scorsese-backed restoration of the 1969 classic. Ray’s legacy isn’t a closed chapter. It’s actively being rediscovered.
This tee carries an illustrated tribute portrait of Ray at work — camera in frame, a filmstrip of his most iconic imagery winding beneath him, rendered in bold red-and-cream against a rising sun. Printed on 240 GSM, bio-washed and combed cotton in our signature oversized cut, available in Golden Yellow, Mustard Yellow, Off White, and White.
This one belongs with the rest of our Ray tribute line. If his detective fiction is more your speed, our Feluda tee carries Feluda’s own joyful outburst from Sonar Kella, while Kotoi Rongo Dekhi Duniaye and Onachar Koro Jodi Raja Tobe Charo Godi pull from his documentary work and Hirak Rajar Deshe — the very sequel to the film this song comes from. Maharaja, tomare selam. Some salutes are worth repeating.
