Ritwik Ghatak said this. Not as a punchline. Not as performance. As the clearest possible expression of a man who spent his entire life making films that mattered deeply — to truth, to partition, to the displaced and the forgotten — and who watched, with full lucidity, as the world moved on without looking.
He was right then. The sentence has not aged.

The Design
The design does not explain itself. It doesn’t need to.
A high-contrast stencil portrait of Ritwik Ghatak — the heavy-framed glasses, the beard, the expression of someone who has seen through things — rendered in a warm cream tone on a deep black base. Not decorative. Not reverent in the glossy, sanitised way that icons sometimes get. Raw. Direct. The visual language of protest art — wheat-paste and walls, not galleries.
Beneath the portrait, in bold Bengali script, the quote that defines the man as much as any of his films:

The word শালা is in there deliberately, in Ghatak’s own register — unfiltered, unsoftened. This is not a quote that has been made comfortable for consumption. It is the quote as he said it. Wearing it means understanding it.

Ritwik Ghatak — The Man Behind the Quote
Ritwik Kumar Ghatak (4 November 1925 – 6 February 1976) was an Indian film director, screenwriter, actor and playwright. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his works remained largely underrated and ignored during his lifetime. Along with Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha and Mrinal Sen, his cinema is primarily remembered for its meticulous depiction of social reality, partition and feminism. Wikipedia.
Where Satyajit Ray received international acclaim and Mrinal Sen received political recognition, Ghatak’s films — largely shaped by the 1947 Partition of Bengal and the experience of displacement — probe the fractured human condition through bold formal experimentation, unforgettable soundscapes, and a profound sense of myth and memory. He made films the industry didn’t know what to do with. He said things people weren’t ready to hear. He died in 1976 having received a fraction of the recognition he deserved — and having known it, and having said so, in exactly the register captured on this shirt.
The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 1970. It was not enough. It never is, for the ones who are actually right.
